THE FIRST 3-D MAP OF THE UNIVERSE
An International team of scientists from CNRS (France), CEA, (France) and Caltec (USA) made the first 3-D map of dark matter in the universe using gravitational lensing effects. The team analyzed the Cosmos field, the largest field of galaxies ever observed with the Hubble space telescope. This study can be found in the Jan. 7, 2007, issue of Nature.2Mar/070

A new study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has come up with new tests for pre-schoolers to help recognize potential problems earlier.2Mar/070
NEW DNA STUDY HELPS EXPLAIN UNIQUE DIVERSITY AMONG MELANESIANS
Small populations of Melanesians - among the most genetically diverse people on the planet - have significant differences in their mitochondrial DNA that can be linked to where they live, the size of their home island and the language they speak, according to a study published in the new online journal, Public Library of Science ONE. GENES DISCOVERED THAT CAN SLOW CELL DIVISION AND MAY FIGHT CANCER
Cancer cells differ from normal cells in, among other things, the way they divide. When a normal cell complies with a signal telling it to divide, it also begins to activate a "braking system" that eventually stops cell division and returns the cell to a resting state. When that braking system is faulty, uncontrolled cell division and the growth of cancer can result. Weizmann Institute scientists studied this system of brakes, and identified a number of the genes involved. [click link for full article]2Mar/070
GENES AND GENIUS
If you're particularly good with puzzles or chess, the reason may be in your genes.A team of scientists, led by psychiatric geneticists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has gathered the most extensive evidence to date that a gene that activates signaling pathways in the brain influences one kind of intelligence. They have confirmed a link between the gene, CHRM2, and performance IQ, which involves a person's ability to organize things logically. [click link for full article]2Mar/070
